Dynamic Probe Super Heavy (DPSH) Testing
At Rivicore, we offer Dynamic Probe Super Heavy (DPSH) testing as part of our ground investigation services. This method involves driving a 90-degree solid cone into the ground using a drop hammer, while recording the number of hammer blows required to advance the probe every 300 mm.
The DPSH test is comparable to the Standard Penetration Test (SPT), using the same cone diameter (50 mm) and hammer specifications. However, unlike the SPT, which tests limited depth intervals, the DPSH provides a continuous profile from surface level until refusal is reached. This makes it especially useful in identifying changes in ground conditions without missing key data between test intervals.

DPSH testing is both cost-effective and efficient. It can be carried out using compact equipment with minimal site setup, making it ideal for preliminary site assessments. While the test does not provide direct soil strength parameters, it offers valuable insights into subsurface consistency, helping to identify rock layers or significant changes in soil hardness. For engineers planning more detailed investigations, DPSH is an excellent starting point. This is the best preliminary tests to do on a site to allow Engineers to plan the best means of further investigation.
DPSH Testing has some major advantages over other types of testing:
- Inexpensive
- The best preliminary tests to do on a site
- The rig is extremely mobile and can fit in tight spaces
- The testing is quick in most cases
DPSH has many uses and applications such as:
- Testing Compaction Levels
- Identifying Soft Spots
- Locating the Parameters of a Potential Sink Hole
- Searching for Water Leaks beside a Pipe Line
- Testing Soil Density
The DPSH rig is also capable of conduction SPT tests using a Raymond Spoon. With the SPT test, soil is captured into the spoon while we still record the blows to measure soil density.
Upon SPT refusal, we can continue with a cone to test deeper levels.
